Contract: Self-employed – initially for 12-18 months, with an opportunity to extend

Hours: Flexible: c. 25-35 hours/week

Location: Remote: work from anywhere in the UK

About us:

SOFII is a charity that has been created by fundraisers for fundraisers. We are here to help fundraisers be their best by sharing the innovation and inspiration that drives and invigorates our sector. SOFII is a gift to you and to charitable fundraisers everywhere – an easily accessible free archive of the best fundraising practice and innovation from around the world. We are safeguarding our fundraising history and constantly adding new content to educate and inspire.

We are looking to recruit a passionate individual to a newly created role to help SOFII reach even more fundraisers around the world, inspiring them to be even better at their jobs so the causes they support can deliver even greater impact.  

About this role:

SOFII is looking to take on a freelancer for a longer-term assignment managing this dynamic charity.  As the role is entirely remote and the charity is lean and efficiently run, we can offer significant flexibility. You can work from wherever you want, when you want – you will be someone we can trust to work however you will be at your best to achieve the goals we agree together. Perhaps you only want to work during term-time to accommodate time with family. Perhaps you only want to commit to three days a week on a longer-term basis to preserve flexibility to take on other freelance assignments. Perhaps you often need to work at odd hours to fit in around caring responsibilities. As long as you have the skills we are looking for and share SOFII’s passion for promoting excellent fundraising, we’d like to talk to you. (In fact, we’re even open to you coming up with a job title that you think best reflects your contribution to this role!)

You will be the chief point of contact for SOFII’s trustees, a dedicated group of volunteers from around the globe who share a deep commitment to SOFII’s mission of catalysing social change through outstanding fundraising. You’ll be responsible for coordinating the work of the other freelancers and volunteers who support SOFII and for working with our trustees and our company secretary to ensure we can deliver on our annual plan. You’ll ensure that we continue to regularly update our website with the high-quality fundraising content that our community values, and you’ll help us deliver annual instalments of our much-loved ‘I Wish I’d Thought of That’ event (affectionately known as IWITOT). You’ll be responsible for stewarding our relationship with our loyal partners and individual donors and helping us grow our pool of sustainable funding. And through social media and other marketing efforts, you’ll help us grow our community so we can reach even more fundraisers.

Key deliverables of this role:

These are the things we’d like to see happen over the course of a typical ‘year in the life’ of SOFII. You may not personally deliver all of these (you might develop a plan for us to work with other freelancers or volunteers to deliver some aspects of this plan), but you’ll be responsible for ensuring that we are able to achieve all that we set out to deliver in the coming year.

  • Content

Keeping the website regularly updated with new content to inspire fundraisers through evidence-based case studies and how-to guides to help them be more effective at their jobs. You might create some of this content yourself, and much of it will be crowd-sourced from our community or commissioned from other freelancers. You’ll help ensure that whatever we share with our community meets our high standards. 

Turning these content updates into regular newsletters for our community.

  • Events

Planning and executing, together with externally commissioned support, at least one successful hybrid (in-person and virtual) IWITOT event. This will involve recruiting a diverse set of speakers, supporting them to develop their content, peer-reviewing their case studies, securing sponsorship, marketing the event, ensuring a great attendee experience.

Looking for opportunities to extend IWITOT to other audiences.

  • Operations

Together with the Chair and Company Secretary, building an annual budget for SOFII and monitoring our income and expenditure to ensure we operate within our means.

Managing the other freelancers and contractors with whom SOFII works.

Together with the Chair and Company Secretary, coordinating the production of papers for SOFII’s board meetings and the preparation of our annual report.

  • Fundraising 

Stewarding our relationship with our loyal donors and business partners, demonstrating the impact that SOFII makes as a result of their support and ensuring they continue to support SOFII in the future. 

Building our base of supporters, including individual supporters through the SOFII 100.

  • Community Management

Overseeing SOFII’s social media presence, protecting our reputation and helping us build relationships with an ever-growing community of people interested in promoting great practice in fundraising.

What we’re looking for:

In order to deliver our objectives, we’ll need a team that has the qualities listed below. Ideally, you’d bring many of these to the table personally. For areas where you don’t already have/can’t readily develop the required expertise, you’ll need to help us find additional freelance or volunteer support. If you’re excited about this opportunity but are missing a few aspects of what we’re looking for, don’t be put off applying; just be open with us about what you can offer, and we can have an honest conversation.  The only elements that are absolutely essential are that you share SOFII’s values and are passionate about our mission.

Skills and attributes required to run SOFII   

  • Familiarity with and affinity for the fundraising sector 
    • Knowledge of specific fundraising disciplines
    • Networks within the fundraising sector
    • Understanding of key issues facing fundraisers
  • Strong copywriting skills
  • Strong editorial skills
  • Stewardship skills: ability to nurture relationships with corporate and individual supporters
  • Business development skills: ability to create a compelling case for support for business partners/donors
  • People management skills
  • Budgeting and financial planning experience
  • Project management skills
  • Event management experience
  • Social media / community management experience
  • Digital marketing expertise (including management of paid advertising, search engine optimisation) SEO, etc.)
  • Database / customer relationship management (CRM) skills
  • Website development and maintenance skills
  • Excellent organisational skills and ability to work on one’s own initiative
